In the process a number of the firms criminal cases are externally audited by an independent lawyer to ensure quality and competency is being maintained. It is a process that all firms carrying out publicly fund criminal defence work must go through. BLJ have been assessed as competent plus, which is above the normal standard required to conduct criminal defence work. In particular, the peer review report highlighted that we operate at a high level of quality, final outcomes in cases which we obtain for clients were either as good as could be expected or better than expected. In addition skills demonstrated included high advocacy skills backed up by an impressive level of resolve and negotiating skills that resulted in overwhelmingly favourable outcomes for clients. The Minister is a passionate supporter of Mediation and was responsible for assisting the Government’s decision to ensure the public had better information and access to Mediation.
